Lucy S. (Rich) Keohan of Bedford died on Jan. 7, 2022.
Born Dec. 29, 1928 in Hyannis, Lucy was the daughter of the late Katherine (Ball) Rich and Willis Scott Rich. Her grandfather (Sheldon William Ball) had a home in Truro on the Oceanside called Ballston Heights - he donated what is now Ballston Beach to the town as a public beach. Lucy's father was in the U.S. Coast Guard stationed in Wellfleet and walked the dunes during the war and watched for Germans. His name is on the WW1 Memorial in Provincetown.
Lucy graduated from Wellfleet High School in 1948, a graduating class of just 13 - this was considered a large class at the time; Lucy's brother's class had 8 people in 1950.
After high school, Lucy earned a nursing degree at Massachusetts General Hospital. She married and lived in the Boston area but continued returning to The Cape with her family, first staying at Ballston Heights and then in the home in Wellfleet they purchased. Lucy raised 5 children, 3 of whom live in Wellfleet today and all of whom are proud 'summer kids,' which seems somewhat lower in ranking than local or wash a shore.
Once in the 1970s, Lucy went into the market and her kids waited in the car. She came out and talked to a little old man for what seemed forever - when she came back, she said 'He is such a nice man, too bad he is a wash a shore!' That 'nice man' was Admiral Nimitz who saved the world from fascism in WW2. If that wasn't enough, he also got her brother, Willis S. Rich, into Annapolis- that is when Lucy's children knew our place in the Wellfleet pecking order!
Lucy was the beloved wife of Philip J. Keohan and loving mother of Susan L. Keohan and her husband Todd Jonz of VT, Patricia A. Keohan Nucefora and her husband William A. of Wellfleet, Philip J. Keohan and his wife Susan E. of Wellfleet, Timothy W. Keohan and his partner Miranda Levy of Wellfleet, and Joseph D. Keohan and his partner Roberto Portocarrera of Boston. Grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of 6.
