Obituary

LtCol Edward M. Murphy III of Bedford died on February 20, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Rachel (Lewis). Loving father of Dawn Murphy of Bedford, Denita Murphy of VA, Crystal and her husband Jonathan Wise of Medway, and Edward IV (Eddie) and his wife Ligia of Dorchester. Son of Sarah and the late Edward M. Murphy. Brother of Michael, George and the late Kenneth. Also survived by 6 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Born March 22, 1940 in Concord NC, he graduated from Morris High School, Bronx, NY in 1956. He attended A&T State University, Greensboro, NC receiving his degree in Architectural Engineering. While there, he was active in the Alpha phi Alpha Fraternity, Student Religious Services, Student Government, and ROTC. After graduation, he accepted his Commission as 2nd Lt. and went to Navigator Training School, James Connolly AFB, Waco, TX. Afterwards, LtCol Muphy was stationed at various Air Force Bases including Mather, Dow, Hanscom, and Westover where he retired from Active Reserves. LtCol Murphy served 23 years of Air Force duty. His civilian professions include Housing and Urban Development, Mobil Oil Co., Charles T. Main and Krupp Mortgage Co. Ed assisted with the original writing of the first Constitution and By-Laws for the Concerned Black Citizens of Bedford. He enjoyed playing tennis, golf, basketball and chess. His last years were spent enjoying fly fishing. He often drew pictures for his children and playfully teased his grandchildren. One of the things the family shared in Winter was shoveling snow and having hot chocolate afterwards. Visiting hours were held in Shawsheen Funeral Home on Sunday, February 25, 2018. A Graveside Funeral Service was held on Monday February 26, 2018 in MA National Cemetery, Bourne MA.
