Damon
November 28, 1933 – June 12, 2024
George A Damon, age 90, of Bedford passed away on June 12, 2024, at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Chelmsford, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.
George was born in Patras, Greece to Aristidis Diamantopoulos and Eleni (Pappaioannou) on November 28, 1933. He went to school in Patras and came to the United States at the age of 18, living in Cambridge. He first enrolled in Chauncy Hall and then went on to attend Northeastern University earning a Master's in Electrical Engineering. During this time, he was in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps serving as a 1st Lieutenant, eventually stationed at Fort Monmouth, NJ. Later he joined the Army Reserves and served as a Captain.
While in college George met the love of his life, Betty, and they were married in June 1957. They moved to Pennsylvania for a year and then back to Cambridge. Their final move in the early 60s was to Bedford where George began working at Raytheon Corporation in the missile division. After some time, George left to work for himself until his retirement.
George enjoyed reading history books, playing chess, cooking, eating good food and traveling. But his greatest love was his family, he loved being surrounded by family and friends, he especially treasured visits from close family friend Kelin. Additionally, George kept in constant touch with his brother Tasos and nephew Ari in Greece. George was also involved in the St Nicholas Greek Church as his faith was very important to him.
George was an extremely outgoing man who made friends wherever he went, whether it was at the COA or the supermarket. He loved to meet new people and try out "hello, how are you" in the various languages he knew!
George is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Betty), son Paul and his wife Cathy of Chelmsford, daughter Diana and her partner Glenn of Billerica, and grandchildren Michael and wife Jen of MN and Lora of CA. He is also survived by brother Anastasios (Tasos) and his wife Stamatia (Mata) of Athens Greece and brother-in-law Arthur Bougas and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Wake and Funeral were privately held in Shawsheen Funeral Home on June 21st with burial in Shawsheen Cemetery. Memorial donations in can be made in his name to St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 17 Meriam St., Lexington, MA 02420.
