Christopher Cameron Day, aged 92, died peacefully at home in Bedford on Jan 26th after a prolonged illness. He and his wife Dr. Heather Day have happily called Bedford home for the last ten years. Chris was a sociable man of many talents and interests, and had a great sense of humor. He delighted in conversation with friends and with new acquaintances.
Music has always played a big part in Chris' life, including playing the piano, going to concerts and hosting amateur groups in his home. While living in Montreal, Chris joined a Scottish Country Dance class, where he met Heather, his wife of 63 years. They continued to dance in the Boston area where there are many active classes. They owned a 31-foot cruising catamaran on which he and his wife and family, along with members of the Pelagic Sailing Club of Boston, spent many happy hours.
Chris was born January 15th, 1934, in Lewes, Sussex, England. He was the father of the late Colin Day (Diane Powers) of Waltham, Bruce Day (died in infancy) and Jenny Day (Ray Tice) of Billerica, and the proud grandfather of Kimberly Tice and Andrew Tice, both engineering students.
Chris began his post high school career in the armed services in the UK, serving in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer corps of the British army before matriculating at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, UK.
He was employed as an engineer in Montreal, Canada before emigrating to the US in 1963. He furthered his engineering career at American Optical (medical division), and has many patents to his name, including for modifications to blood pressure monitors, and designs for an on-demand pacemaker. He subsequently worked for Warner Lambert Medical on Crosby Drive in Bedford.
In 1990, he changed career paths to become a piano technician, honing his skills at North Bennet Street School to begin his new career which he pursued for the next 25 years. Some highlights were servicing the pianos at Tanglewood during their summer season, refurbishing 60+ pianos in his home workshop, and socializing with piano owners.
After retirement, Chris and Heather enjoyed many trips, visiting Central and South America by boat and bus, exploring Europe by barge in France, the Alsace region and Germany, and trips to several National Parks in the US. He enjoyed travel and photography, but he was happiest at home with friends and family, often regaling them with tales of his exploits.
Chris specified cremation and no services. In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree, or donate to your favorite charity. A life celebration will be planned at a later date.
